The Stockport Music Map

The Stockport Music Map takes you on a fascinating journey through the town’s musical history, with over 200 hand drawn illustrations from local artist Emily Flanagan. The map features the stories of music legends that visited and played in Stockport including David Bowie, Elton John, Lemmy from Motorhead, Jimi Hendrix and lots more.

The idea for the Stockport Music Map started over lockdown when John and Rosemary were thinking of ways to attract people back into Stockport to support the new independent shops and bars that had opened. After sketching out a few ideas, they soon realised they needed a professional artist and approached Emily Flanagan whose illustrative work can be seen on street murals and shop windows on the Underbanks.

“We immediately thought of Emily because we love her quirky, playful style,” says John. “She had designed the Blossoms Foodie Loving Spaces T-shirt for us which was so popular. The map originally started off with about twenty key illustrations and it just kept getting bigger because of all the new stories we were discovering! Now that the map is complete we’re working on the Stockport Music Stories book that will enable us to document Stockport’s musical history in more detail.”

When designing the map, John wanted it to have a pop-art look and Emily knew instinctively how to achieve this with colour and creativity. Emily brings her own distinctive personality to each of the illustrations and is particularly fond of her drawing of Elton John.

She has brought to life some of Stockport’s legendary music luminaries such as Lemmy from Motörhead living off tinned Ambrosia Creamed Rice and Paul McCartney serenading a couple at the bus stop outside Strawberry Studios!

With Stockport’s significant music venues and locations featured on the map, alongside music icons from the 1960’s to the present day, this is the perfect present for that special someone who loves everything SK!
